NW sets aside R35 million to fix pothole-filled roads─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:13 Wed, 18 Dec 2019
The North West government has site aside a whopping R35 million to assist municipalities to launch a war on potholes.
These ailing roads filled with potholes in the province will finally get a facelift following the provincial colloquium by the Department of Roads and Public Works earlier this year. The MEC, Oageng Molapisi, says the department is heeding the calls from residents and businesses to fix the roads in the province. He says his department has already appointed 13 contractors for this financial year and more will be appointed with hopes of working around the clock to fix the problem.
The department has already prioritised four towns as a pilot and committed at least R20 million. He says this 74% of unpaved roads in the province is by far an indication that the province is in a crisis. Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District has the largest amount of unpaved roads and Dr Keneth Kaunda District has the lowest. This is broken down as follows, “In Bojanala, 2365 km is unpaved while 1787 km is paved or tarred. Dr Kenneth Kaunda has a total of 2255 km unpaved roads and consists of 881 km paved or tarred roads. Ngaka Modiri Molema has a total of 3672 km unpaved roads, with 1578 km paved or tarred while DR RSM has 6364 km unpaved roads with only 843 km paved or tarred,” he says.
