Commuters in the Free State are continuing to lose their lives with many experiencing multiple injuries due to road accidents.


Since the start of the festive season, the province has seen many people losing their lives and scores admitted to different hospitals in the province for moderate and minor injuries. 

In the early hours of Christmas, 25 December 2019, one person was declared dead after a minibus taxi crashed on the N3 between Harrismith and Warden while travelling to from Mpumalanga to the Eastern Cape. 

The Provincial Emergency Medical Services' (EMS) spokesperson, Sipho Towa, says during the road crash eleven people suffered moderate injuries while five suffered minor injuries. Towa says the patients were transported to the Thebe and Busamed Hospitals in Harrismith.

Meanwhile, two more accidents that occurred this morning have been reported in the province. One occurred at about 3 am, involving a minibus that collided into the rear of a truck near Kroonstad Ultra City and as a result, eight people suffered minor injuries while four suffered moderate injuries. Towa says those who were injured include nine males and three females. He says they were transported to Boitumelo Hospital and a private hospital in Kroonstad.

He adds that in another separate incident one person who was seriously injured was airlifted to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein. Two people were moderately injured and another two suffered minor injuries and were transported to Mohau Hospital in Hoopstad in the province.
