The police in the Free State are investigating the death of a ten-year-old boy who allegedly drowned in the Witherow Quarry in Heidedal, Bloemfontein, in the Free State.

According to police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, it is alleged that the deceased was with his friends on Thursday 16 January 2020, when the incident occurred. A search party was launched by the community yesterday after the boy did not return home. The boy's body was discovered floating near the edge of the dam.

Police were summoned and the body was recovered and taken to a government mortuary.

OFM News previously reported that according to an eyewitness, the boy's body was discovered by a security guard who was patrolling the area. The boy, who is a learner at the Heide Primary School, apparently went missing on Thursday evening at around 20:00.  An inquest docket was opened and police are still waiting for postmortem results to determine the cause of death.
