CUT questions if arrested protesters are students─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:43 Wed, 11 Mar 2020
It is being questioned whether the eight arrested protesters, believed to be students, are in fact students at the Central University of Technology (CUT) at the Welkom-based campus.
The institution’s spokesperson, Dan Maritz, says the suspects arrested were not verified to confirm them as students. This, as one male and seven female students, were apprehended for alleged public violence after they blocked the gate with bricks and burning garbage bins on Sunday night. The protest followed the suspension of a student organisation's chairperson, who allegedly submitted a fraudulent medical certificate.
Maritz, however, tells OFM News that the management and students reached an agreement that the academic programme on that campus will continue.
Also responding on questions from OFM News, he said the registrar did not receive any official resignation of some Student Representative Council (SRC) members, as allegedly stated on social media.
