This after he was found with R600 000 in cash in his house in Riebeeckstad, Welkom, and was arrested earlier this week.

The Free State Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, says this arrest came during a Hawks operation to rid the province of the zama-zamas (illegal miners) and their criminal activities. She says Hawks members arrived at the house where the man was alleged to be residing and found him and a lady.

The lady allegedly claimed she was just the housekeeper. Steyn further says the man was positively linked to illegal mining activities in the area. The Hawks members continued to search the house and discovered about R600 000 in cash. The cash was confiscated and he was arrested on the spot. Steyn adds that his legal status is under investigation.
