CUT takes early recess following protests─── MARVIN NTSANE 14:20 Fri, 13 Mar 2020
The Central University of Technology (CUT) has resorted to closing its Welkom campus earlier than usual after ongoing protests this week.
This follows an arrest of 17 students in total at this campus yesterday. Free State Police spokesperson, Motantshi Makhele, confirmed this, saying students were throwing stones at the security guards. A total of 11 Males and 6 females were arrested and they will be charged with contravening a court order and public violence. They will appear in court soon.
“Upon arrival, the gates were closed by the students as they were busy throwing stones at security guards. The guards fired rubber bullets. The police tried to intervene but students kept on throwing stones, not allowing cars to pass” Makhele said.
The management of CUT says since December last year they have been working tirelessly and had continuous positive engagements with the student leadership and key staff members towards ensuring a smooth start to the 2020 academic year.
It is alleged that students are protesting after an SRC member was suspended for submitting a fraudulent medical certificate and a memorandum of demands being unanswered.
The management further says these developments have resulted in the campus being unsafe for the continuation of normal academic activities.
OFM News reported earlier this week a total of eight CUT students were arrested following protests on the campus. They were all released by the Welkom Magistrate Court with a warning. The case was postponed to 21 April 2020 for further investigation.
