‘SA SOEs should be privatised’ – new IFP leader | News Article

The new face of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has in a Bloemfontein briefing added his voice to calls for the country’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to be privatised.

Hlabisa’s comments come as South Africa experiences its latest bout of load-shedding, following the announcement of a fault pump at the ailing state-owned entity’s Koeberg plant.

Hlabisa, who is in the Free State as part of the party’s nationwide tour to grow its presence, says the billions of rands currently spent on the financially struggling SOEs must be redirected to small, medium and micro-enterprises. He says they are the backbone of the country’s economy.

Hlabisa stresses that this is one way to reduce the country’s eleven-year high unemployment rate of 29,1% and turn the country’s sluggish economy around. Hlabisa and co are in the Free State till Sunday.
