Emfuleni municipal workers strike over unpaid salaries─── 18:00 Mon, 16 Mar 2020
Security has been strengthened at the Emfuleni Local Municipality's offices in Vanderbijlpark today, following a violent strike by EPWP workers over alleged non-payment of salaries.
The angry workers went on a rampage and barricaded the municipal's gates with burning tyres and other objects after allegedly not receiving their February salaries.
Traffic flow has also been disrupted in the CBD after the workers barricaded streets with refuse.
Municipal spokesperson, Stan Gaba, tells OFM News they are still investigating the grievances surrounding the strike. He added that the municipality is unaware of the reasons behind this strike.
According to Vaal police spokesperson, Gertrude Mokhale, they have deployed police officials to the scene and will continue monitoring the situation.
She concluded by saying there is no damage to property reported and no arrests have been made.
Just last week, the sheriff of the court attached assets belonging to the municipality, over the historic and current debt owed to Eskom.
The total debt owed by Emfuleni to Eskom stands at R2.3 billion.
