#Coronavirus: CUT suspends classes─── MARVIN NTSANE 06:45 Tue, 17 Mar 2020
The Central University of Technology (CUT) has suspended classes and its autumn graduations.
This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement on Sunday declaring the outbreak of Coronavirus a state of disaster.
Deputy vice-chancellor of the university, Henk de Jager, says he is confident that this step will help to contain the virus.
The autumn graduations were scheduled to take place from 17 April until 22 April. He says that a new date will be set later in the year.
De Jager adds that the cancellation of classes will allow the university, the minister of higher education and training (DHET), Blade Nzimande, the department of higher education, as well as Universities South Africa (USAf) to embark on longer-term planning related to the remainder of the academic year.
CUT is the second university in South Africa to close after the Coronavirus outbreak following the University of Cape Town.
