#CoronaOutbreak: ANC, EFF postpone party activities | News Article

The ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has extended the stay of the party’s Interim Political Committee (IPC) in the North West set to end in April, by three months and cancelled planned party activities.

This as these gatherings and activities across the country in ANC structures would have seen more than 100 people gathering. This after the announcement that the gathering of more than 100 people, amongst others, was prohibited due to the coronavirus outbreak pandemic in the country. On Monday, Ramaphosa said the National Executive Committee (NEC) has suspended until further notice all its Branch General Meetings and Branch AGMs, as well as other planned activities, amongst others.

The ANC IPC in the province was instituted following serious and deep factionalism within its ranks, which led to the disbandment of the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) in 2018.

The ANC’s top 6 officials yesterday briefed the nation on the party’s approach to the coronavirus outbreak.

“The ANC calls on all institutions and all sectors, public and private, to adhere to the restrictions on public gatherings. In this regard, the NEC has suspended, until further notice, all its Branch General Meetings and Branch AGMs, Regional and Provincial meetings and conferences of the ANC and the Leagues, as well as other planned large activities,” Ramaphosa said.

The announcement will also include the postponement of the National General Council (NGC) of the ANC since this was planned for the winter months of July-August 2020.

“Although no large gatherings will be held, ANC branch executive committees (BECs) are still required to meet and play an active role in helping the local communities to respond to the pandemic,” he adds.

He further says that the social mobilisation should include educating communities about Covid-19, how to prevent it through regular washing of hands, social distance, not shaking hands, not spreading droplets when sneezing or coughing in the fold of your arm.

Meanwhile, News24 reported the EFF earlier said in a statement the party decided to cancel all of its major gatherings and events.
