Eskom agrees to stop seizing Emfuleni assets | News Article

Power utility Eskom has agreed to immediately stop the attachment of the Emfuleni Municipality's assets.

The decision was taken at a meeting between Eskom and Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The Sheriff of the High Court last week descended on the offices of the municipality and seized furniture and vehicles.

Emfuleni owes Eskom R2.3 billion.

In 2018, a court ruled that Eskom could recover R615 million of the debt from the municipality.

Maile met with Eskom CEO André de Ruyter, and the Gauteng Legislature on Tuesday to discuss the outstanding debt owed to the power utility.

“We have agreed that Eskom will suspend the attachment, upon receipt of an amount of R50 million by end of business today,” said Maile.

“We will in the next two weeks, between the two of us, receive a plan that in our view must be realistic and affordable.”

Emfuleni last week failed in a court bid to stop Eskom from seizing its assets.
