#CoronaOutbreak: Courts will remain open─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:31 Tue, 17 Mar 2020
Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has informed South Africans on Tuesday 17 March 2020 that courts will remain open. This comes against the background of precautions taken as the coronavirus spreads in South Africa.
He says sanitisers will be positioned at all points of entry, exit, work stations, and in the passages and corridors as a stringent measure. The announcement follows after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday night that the gathering of more than 100 people, amongst others, was prohibited due to the outbreak. Mogoeng says the courts will remain open and that it is important that there is running water and toilet paper.
So far 62 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed by the Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize.
All the detention facilities will, however, be closed for thirty days as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of the virus.
“If the situation arises that South Africa reaches millions and millions of people, we could review our decision on our courts. We spoke to the Justice Minister to make sure all precautionary processes are followed with inmates who are coming to court,” he adds.
He further adds that the litigants, witnesses, and those accompanying children, families or support groups will be allowed into court.
“Reception staff, for example, will be given gloves, disposable gowns, and masks. There will also be decontamination of cells, courts, lifts and ablution facilities, handles and taps at our courts,” he further adds.
