NW minor to answer for murder and robbery─── MARVIN NTSANE 15:14 Thu, 19 Mar 2020
A 16-year-old is expected to appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court in Potchefstroom in the North West, tomorrow, 20 March 2020, for charges of murder and robbery.
He is being processed in terms of the Child Justice Act, 2008 (Act No. 75 of 2008).
This follows the murder of a tuck-shop owner and business robbery in Makwassie township earlier this week, 16 March 2020.
The police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the suspect and his accomplice – 26-year-old Pogisho Mqahiwa - allegedly entered the tuck shop and demanded cigarettes from the owner.
They then attacked him and he was stabbed in the neck and robbed of his cellphone and cash. The two suspects then fled from the scene on foot.
The police were alerted and the suspects were both arrested within three hours after the incident.
Myburgh says investigations indicated that the 16-year-old suspect is linked to another common robbery committed in Makwassie on Sunday 15 March 2020.
Pogisho Mqahiwa appeared in the Makwassie Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 18 March 2020, and the case was postponed to 24 March 2020 for bail hearing. He remains in custody.
The Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, applauded the police for their commitment that resulted in the arrest.
