The Free State Department of Education is yet to appoint a contractor for the refurbishment of the Dr Blok Secondary School’s Hostel.

This, amidst questions about the progress of the project and the safety of learners who have, for more than a year, been temporarily housed at one of the school’s vacant buildings.

The school’s hostel caught fire on 11 January 2019 after the blaze allegedly started at the hostel parents' house and spread to the hostel.

The incident saw 135 hostel learners being rescued with nine taken to the Pelonomi Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Although there were no fatalities, the incident raised questions about learners’ safety and the state of schools’ infrastructure.

When OFM News visited the school earlier this week it was discovered that there is no building on site and not much visible progress made.

Departmental Spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, meanwhile says they are in the final process of appointing a contractor and that their meeting with stakeholders scheduled for Thursday was postponed amidst coronavirus concerns and they will resume the process once the dust has settled.
