Two learners die after consuming rat poison─── 16:00 Fri, 13 Mar 2020
Two memorial services are being held today in the Vaal, following alleged suicide by two learners on different occasions.
A grade eleven learner from Moshate Secondary School in Sebokeng, allegedly confessed to his parents, moments before his death, to consuming rat poison called "Mafenatha".
He died while being transported to Sebokeng hospital. The learner is expected to be laid to rest this Saturday in Lesotho.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a grade twelve learner from Mohloli Maritime School in Sharpeville near Vanderbijlpark, took her own life, following an alleged argument with her grandmother.
Family members intervened and tried to calm her down, however, she reportedly went behind the house where she consumed poison.
The victim then informed her sister who called an ambulance.
A suicide note was reportedly found behind the house where she allegedly stated that she consumed Mafenatha.
She will also be laid to rest this Saturday in Sharpeville.
A concerned parent, who requested to remain anonymous, told OFM News that it is worrying how easily this poison can be bought at taxi ranks and train stations.
In January this year, OFM News reported of a grade nine learner from Khutlo-Tharo Secondary School in Sebokeng, who attempted suicide and failed, after drinking poison and collapsed outside her school.
