ANC NW expresses shock over JB Marks protests─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:10 Mon, 23 Mar 2020
The North West ANC's Interim Political Committee (IPC) has expressed shock at the destruction of public property by alleged irate residents in the troubled JB Marks Municipality which is under administration.
The IPC's spokesperson, Kenney Morolong, says they are perturbed by the developments in the Municipality which includes Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp. He has condemned with disdain the destruction of property during a community protest. On Wednesday, Ikageng residents of Extension 6 went on the rampage, destroying property of the municipality over a 2016 water and infrastructure project. Morolong has, however, urged residents to be vigilant against criminals masquerading as community activists who continue to hijack genuine community concerns.
"During the previous general elections, we vowed to improve the manner in which the ANC interacts with communities. "Consequently, the IPC, through its deployees to the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region, will meet with the affected communities of JB Marks with a view of resolving their grievances," he adds.
On Thursday, JB Marks spokesperson, Willy Maphosa, told OFM News when the large group couldn’t gain entry to the building due to security measures in place, the mob began breaking windows at the entrance and pushed over the fence surrounding the building, causing extensive damage.
The toilet and water infrastructure project at the centre of the unrest dates back to 2016. Maphosa conceded the appointed contractor did not fulfil his obligations and half erected toilet top structures. His contract has in 2020 been cancelled due to poor performance. In addition to this, informal dwellers occupied the land where the project was taking place, adding to the municipality’s predicament.
