Authorities seek family of dead in FS horror crash | News Article

Free State police are still in search for the next of kin of the victims of a horrific multi-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of nine people on the N1 this Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, implores anyone with information that can assist in identifying the deceased to contact Parys police urgently.

Makhele says three women and six men are among the dead.

OFM News reported that on Sunday afternoon just after 14:00 pm, a truck travelling towards Johannesburg crashed into the Chevrolet light delivery vehicle in front of it after said delivery vehicle applied breaks suddenly seconds prior, causing the collision.

The impact of the collision resulted in the same  light delivery vehicle losing control and ending up on the opposite lane where it crashed head-on into an Inveco minibus which was travelling towards Kroonstad. Parys police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

An unknown number or patients were taken to local hospitals while two more were airlifted. Their current statuses are yet to be confirmed.

The accident resembles another Free State collision earlier this month which claimed the lives of eight people. This accident, on 15 March, involved two delivery vehicles and a truck.

Spokesperson for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, Hillary Mophethe, reported the accident occurred at around 07:00 am when a delivery vehicle with a KwaZulu-Natal registration plate collided head-on with a Northern Cape truck.

The delivery vehicle reportedly had six occupants.

The sheer impact of the collision swayed the truck into the middle of the road where a second delivery vehicle from the same company as the first crashed into the accident scene resulting in more casualties.
