Free State fraudsters sentenced─── MARVIN NTSANE 09:49 Tue, 24 Mar 2020
A 33-year-old former bank employee, Fikile Goliath, was recently sentenced to 8 years imprisonment by the Bloemfontein Commercial Crime Court in the Free State.
He was found guilty of defrauding a well-known bank of more than half a million rand. His sentence was suspended for three years, with an added six months correctional supervision and a further forty two months of house arrest.
The Free State Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, says Goliath issued himself with Standard Bank cards and linked them to four clients. This was to gain access to the money from the accounts. He further transferred the money from those accounts and distributed the funds to other additional bank accounts.
He thereafter made withdrawals of different amounts totaling to R507 356 over a period of time and transferred some of the cash to friends and family members for their personal use.
Meanwhile in an unrelated matter, 38-years old Seromo Tsau, was found guilty and sentenced on nine counts of fraud.
The case stems from 2011 when a case of fraud was reported at the Phuthaditjhaba Saps in QwaQwa.
Steyn says it was alleged that Tsau was pocketing money from clients of a funeral parlour. The monthly premiums meant for Remoha Funeral Parlour were appropriated by Tsau.
She says policy holders only realized after they submitted claims for funerals that their money was never recorded on the books of the funeral parlour.
Tsau was found guilty by the Bloemfontein Commercial Crime Court and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. Four of those years were suspended to five.
