AG calls for tighter financial controls─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:17 Tue, 24 Mar 2020
The Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu, says there remain a high need to implement financial control measures in spheres of government.
Makwetu says preventive controls not only promote transparency and strengthen accountability, but ensure that there is no room left for irregular and wasteful expenditure. Makwetu has called on leadership at municipalities and other spheres of government to take an active role in the financial health of municipalities, and start holding errant employees to account. This as South Africa continues to feel the ripple effects of the global Coronavirus pandemic.
With South Africa's economy already feeling the pinch of the Covid-19 pandemic, concerns over the country's economy are on the rise.
It is reported that prudent financial decisions are at this stage of the essence as the country will undergo a 21-day lockdown following President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement last night.
The number of confirmed positive cases now stands at 554, an increase of 152 from Monday.
