Three people were injured in an accident on the N1 near Winburg in the Free State today between a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) truck and a light transport vehicle.

The provincial Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Sipho Towa, confirmed that a light transport vehicle bumped into the rear of the SANDF truck. Two soldiers allegedly sustained moderate injuries. They were both transported to the 3 Mil hospital which is situated at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein.

Towa says the other victim was transported to the Winburg Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

He further says that the army truck was driving in the direction of Bloemfontein when the accident occurred. One lane was obstructed but was later opened for traffic.

This incident comes just a day before the SANDF deploys its members to various places in the country to help enforce the national lockdown.

Ramaphosa announced that the SANDF will support the South African Police Service (SAPS) with enforcing the lockdown which commences on 26 March 2020 and will end on 16 April 2020 at midnight.
