60 CUT students back in court | News Article

A total of 60 Central University of Technology (CUT) students are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court in the Free State today.

National Prosecution Agency (NPA) spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, says they are all charged with public violence.

This follows after the group was granted bail of R1000 each by the same court late last month.

Provincial police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, said they were arrested for allegedly contravening a court interdict.

He added that they were allegedly protesting over unpaid National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances - which includes meals, accommodation and books.

The university’s Dan Maritz said that the protest came as a surprise, following a series of engagements with the student representative council.

He added although the students have the constitutional right to protest, they also have the responsibility of doing so in a peaceful manner.

Shuping said that the students were given strict bail conditions which includes:

  1. They may not interfere with student activities.
  2. They may not partake in any illegal gathering.
  3. They may not disrupt any lectures.
