Families of the 44 Free State bursary recipients who completed 14 days of quarantine at the Ranch Hotel in Limpopo after being evacuated from the city of Wuhan in China, have now been reunited with their loved ones.

These students were part of more than 100 South Africans who were stranded in Wuhan, which is where the coronavirus disease broke out several months ago.

Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, upon welcoming the students home last night said the Provincial Government, working with other stakeholders, had worked around the clock to ensure their safe return.

She adds the students could assist government by using their first-hand experience to spread the message of how people can protect themselves.

The move by the provincial government to repatriate the students followed a meeting with parents, who were anxious about the plight of their children - stuck in the city where the virus broke out.

Ntombela says the students have been through a lot. "However, they remain strong and are quite knowledgeable about this disease. I am very happy that our children are finally back," she adds.

Meanwhile, president Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday night.

"We should be happy that they tested negative for the virus and are in good health. They are in high spirits and are deeply thankful for what the country has done for them by bringing them home safe," Ramaohosa said.
