WATCH: IPID investigates FS police after nurses' protests | News Article

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched investigations into the matter involving medical personnel at the Bongani Hospital in the Free State.

This, after two healthcare workers at the Welkom-based hospital were injured after police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at a group that was protesting at the hospital on Tuesday. The group, involving nurses, embarked on a strike demanding that they must be provided transportation to work.

Provincial Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, confirmed that the nurses were protesting against transport costs and what they deemed as unfair practices by taxi operators in the region, who allegedly demanded that they pay extra. He says the nurses then resolved to express their frustration at the hospital for the department to intervene.

Mvambi says the department has resolved to organise transport for employees and they have resumed with their duties. Meanwhile, acting national spokesperson for IPID, Sontaga Seisa, says no arrests have been made at this stage and investigations continues.
