#CoronavirusSA: Department condemns assault on water truck drivers─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 07:33 Thu, 02 Apr 2020
The Department of Water and Sanitation in the Free State condemns the alleged assault of water tank drivers in Welkom during the lockdown period.
Welkom is one of a handful of towns and cities in the Free State that have received a total of 612 water tanks and 31 trucks to ensure all communities have access to water as the country battles the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
No additional detail on the alleged incident has been provided by the department. The department, however, condemned the incident, describing it as an act of criminality. Free State police are yet to comment on the matter.
“These are acts of criminality and are not helpful to needy communities. Prohibiting the supply of water to communities that are in desperate need of this resource constitutes a crime,” says the department.
Meanwhile on Thursday, Welkom residents are expected to be without water due to Sedibeng Water working on a main supply line. It is not yet determined whether this is repair or maintenance work.
The areas affected are: Naudeville, St. Helena, Bedelia, Rheederpark, Jan Cilllierspark, Sandania and Mediclinic.
