More than 800 people have been arrested in Central South Africa so far for defying the national disaster act under the mandatory 21-day lockdown due to the coronavirus.


Police minister, Bheki Cele, while briefing the media last night indicated that these 868 people were arrested between 27 and 30 March. He says 368 have been arrested in the Free State, 225 in the North West and 290 in the Northern Cape. While addressing the media before the national command council on Covid-19, minister Cele also announced the national figures of those arrested so far stands at 2289.

Minister Cele says the police received 26 complaints on the first three days of the lockdown, but since then there has only been 12 complaints received. He urged citizens to respect the South African Police Services (SAPS) members. 

Meanwhile, Cele says the police have received 87 000 calls of Gender-based Violence since the beginning of the lockdown. He also said that a police officer was arrested for raping his wife.
