Health Minister Zweli Mkhize

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirms the coronavirus death toll in South Africa has risen to nine while positive confirmed cases now stand at 1585.

This is an increase of 80 cases since the previous report. Gauteng remains the epicenter followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

In Central South Africa the numbers have slightly changed with the Northern Cape now at seven, North West at 11 and the Free State at 85.

OFM News yesterday reported that the Free State also confirmed its second Covid-19 death.

While Mkhize in a statement confirms that the deceased in the Free State is an 86-year-old male, the provincial health department said the family is not keen that the department release the name of the deceased and appealed for privacy.

The Provincial Department's spokesperson Mondli Mvambi confirmed that they are providing counseling to the bereaved family and that the province remains committed to flattening the Covid-19 curve.

While there are no Covid-19 deaths in the North West and the Northern Cape, the two provinces have recorded an increase.
