Salga concerned about councillors, #SAlockdown regulations | News Article

The South African Local Government Association (Salga) says it is concerned and disappointed by reports of some councillors contravening the Disaster Management Act Regulations and the Code of Conduct of Councillors.

Salga spokesperson, Sivuyile Mbambato, says the association condemns such behavior and urges residents to report these councillors to the relevant authorities, including mayors and municipal speakers.

Salga reacted after the mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State, Nkosinjani Speelman, was temporarily suspended for contradicting the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, and also making derogatory comments when he was welcoming the South African National Defence Force members in Welkom earlier this week.

Meanwhile, a councillor from the Matatiele Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape was found unlawfully distributing travel permits to residents. In a third incident, a councillor in Polokwane in Limpopo was arrested for being part of a group of people who were playing loud music and consuming alcohol in a public area.

Mbambato says should a councillor be found to be in breach of the Code of Conduct, they might be removed from office by the MEC responsible for local government. He says councillors and the municipal leadership must be leaders in the fight against the coronavirus.
