The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) in North West is saddened by the death of Popinyane Mogwasi, whose life was claimed during a reported case of gender-based violence (GBV).

The incident reportedly happened at Setlagole village in the Ratlou local municipality.

Mogwasi (22) is said to have been severely beaten and locked in a shack by her partner. She was found unconscious and transferred to Bophelong hospital and later to the Tshepong Hospital complex, where she passed away.

ANCWL acting provincial secretary, Bitsa Lenkopane, says GBV reports during the current national Covid-19 lockdown are overwhelming.  Her organisation is pleading with authorities to ensure perpetrators of these crimes are punished.

North West police spokesperson, Brigader Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News that a case of assault was opened, and later changed to murder.

Mokgwabone adds the 24-year-old suspect will appear before the Setlagole Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

"We call on law enforcement agencies to act strongly and urgently to bring these perpetrators to book, and continuously set example and send warnings to all that such behaviour will not be tolerated," says Lenkopane.
