Fourteen schools across the Free State have been burgled and vandalised since the start of the national Covid-19 lockdown. The spate of incidents at schools has been spreading across the country.
In the latest incident, burglars got away with tablets and other equipment after they broke into a school in Botshabelo this weekend. Free State Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, confirmed to OFM News that the break-in at Setjhaba Se Maketse Combined School was discovered on Monday morning by security personnel. Education MEC Tate Makgoe condemned what he called a spate of burglaries, vandalism and damage to properties at schools in the province. He appealed to communities to guard and protect the schools in their areas and to report any suspected or criminal activities.
The provincial Education Department says the breakdown by districts looks as follows:
Fezile Dabi District - one school was vandalised.
Lejweleputsoa District - two schools were vandalised.
Motheo District - two schools and one hostel were vandalised.
Xhariep District - Burglaries/theft reported at two schools.
Thabo Mofutsanyane is the only district where no incidents were reported.
