#Covid19: NW mayor takes salary cut | News Article

The Mayor of the Rustenburg Local Municipality in the Bojanala Platinum District in the North West has pledged to take a salary cut to put towards Covid-19 relief efforts.

Mpho Khunou and the Mayoral Committee will take a 30% salary cut for the next three months towards efforts against the Coronavirus pandemic.

The move comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement that he would take a 33% pay cut for three months, along with Deputy President David Mabuza, ministers and deputy ministers towards the Solidarity Fund,  which has been created to enable donors to make contributions to the fight against Covid-19.

While questions are mounting as to whether other municipalities will follow suit, the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has announced that municipal workers would not pledge for salary cuts. The union stated that, unlike politicians, municipal workers were among the lowest-paid employees in South Africa and simply did not have money to put towards the fund.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Monday announced that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country has risen to 2272, which is an increase of 99 from previous figures while the total number of Covid-19 related deaths now stands at 27.
