#SAlockdown: Cope asks food parcel intervention─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:45 Wed, 15 Apr 2020
The political party Cope says president Cyril Ramaphosa and the Coronavirus National Command Council must intervene in the distribution of food parcels across communities in the country.
This follows allegations that ANC councillors in the Northern Cape are giving these food parcels to their parents, relatives and friends.
The National spokesperson of Cope, Dennis Bloem, says the allegations of corruption and favouritism with regards to the distribution of relief food parcels during the lockdown must not be taken lightly. Bloem says this complaint by community members have the potential to lead to unrest in communities. Meanwhile, ANC spokesperson in the province, Tshepo Louw, says such individuals need to be exposed so that the organisation can immediately deal with them and expose them to the community.
Bloem says an empty stomach knows no law. "People around the country are complaining about the politically affiliated officials in charge of the distribution of these food parcels."
We knew all along that some of the corrupt elements in the ANC will abuse this situation to steal the poor people's money," he adds. He further says people are alleging that indigent people who are supposed to be beneficiaries of the much-needed food parcels are overlooked.
"It is alleged that these rogue corrupt officials are giving these food parcels to their parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, relatives and friends.
"The actions of these corrupt officials are also contributing to people contravening the lockdown regulations and they leave their homes and fill the streets to look for food for their families, Bloem further says.
