#SAlockdown: Finance MEC to ensure NW municipalities comply | News Article

Plans are afoot to ensure that North West municipalities comply with the 2020-2021 Medium Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework (MTREF) budget.

The MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosho, says the compliance and sound financial management in municipalities remains a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. She says despite the declared state of disaster due to the Coronavirus by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the compliance set out in the legislation remains a key priority.

These municipalities, of which most are under administration, will be expected to give indications of how they are implementing the regulations set out by the relevant departments. Rosho says since the nationwide lockdown, the Provincial Treasury (PT) has been keeping to its oversight function of ensuring compliance.

"To help municipalities manage their functions better in this period, PT has created a template for each municipality to assess their readiness and compliance as to what is expected of them in terms of adhering to regulations that in turn does not negatively affect the delivery of essential services," she adds.

She further says that these municipalities are expected to provide a clear plan and process towards compliance with the pending legislative requirements within a period of 30 days as required by the Government Gazette.

Rosho adds that she has requested these municipalities to ensure joint implementation of all the lockdown regulations set out by the national government. This is to support the country to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 virus.  She also appealed to residents to stay at home to save the lives of all South Africans.
