Another province in Central South Africa has seen a number of schools being vandalised by suspected criminals since the beginning of the national lockdown.
The Department of Basic Education confirms that at least 39 schools in the Northern Cape has suffered damages due to criminal acts. This number has increased after the Northern Cape Education MEC, Mac Jack, reported 26 schools were vandalised last week.
The Frances Baard District is one of the districts in this province that is experiencing this spate of burglaries in which eleven schools were reported damaged. The ZF Mgcawu District had nine affected schools, the Pixley Ka Seme District had seven and the Namakwa District had three schools reportedly vandalised.
All the cases have been reported to the South African Police Services. Jack condemned the incidents. He also encouraged community members to take ownership of the schools and report any wrongdoing to the authorities so that the perpetrators can be brought to book.
