The 47-year old North West man accused of bludgeoning his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend to death with a spade in the North West this weekend, will remain in police custody till his next court appearance in Lehurutshe next week.

North West police spokesperson, Sam Tselenyane says the accused - Mataboge Mosetlha - appeared this morning before the Lehurutshe Magistrate's Court and was remanded in custody. The case was postponed to next week for formal bail application. Mosetlha was arrested on Saturday, a mere, 18 hours after his 45-year old ex-girlfriend, Kgakgamatso Molefi and her 42-year old boyfriend, Pogiso Molefe, were brutally attacked and murdered while asleep in their home in Dinokana village. Tselenyane tells OFM News’ Olebogeng Motse the suspect is reported to have been accommodated at the deceased couple’s home on the evening of the brutal murder

Tselenyane says the suspect arrived at the deceased’s residence at 20:30 pm on Friday, requesting accommodation, alleging he had no where else to go. Molefi agreed to accommodating the suspect and showed him a room outside the main house where he could sleep. At around 01:00 it’s alleged the suspect forcibly entered the main house using a spade and then proceeded to attack the couple with the same spade while they were sleeping. The 42-year old boyfriend was pronounced dead on the scene whilst the 45-year old woman, later died from her injuries at a local hospital.

Mosetlha was found by police with the assistance of community members on Saturday afternoon, hiding amongst bushes in the village where the incident occurred. He was shortly thereafter arrested for the crime. The government has noted a spike in reported cases of gender-based violence in the country during lockdown. The Foundation for Human Rights has added their voice to the call for something to be done, revealing that police have received more than 2 000 complaints of gender-based violence (GBV) in just seven days.
