At least three police officials and two paramedics have been taken to the hospital for medical examinations following the violent destruction of two police vehicles and a provincial ambulance in the North West on Tuesday, 21 April 2020.

The irate residents in Boikhutsong in Lichtenburg torched and burned these vehicles following the deaths of an eight-year-old boy and a young girl, whose age is not yet confirmed, in two separate incidents.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says it is alleged that a K9 Unit vehicle hit a child who ran from the yard to cross Kudu Street in Boikhutsong yesterday afternoon. The child was later certified dead on the scene.

He says this incident followed after a girl child was hit by a bakkie in the Ottosdal-Lichtenburg road near Blydeville.

Mokgwabone says, as a result, the police are investigating two separate cases of culpable homicide and cases of public violence and malicious damage to property.

He adds that a local municipality traffic vehicle was also pelted with stones while goods were looted from one of the local tuckshops.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, condemned the actions of these residents. Kwena also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased children.

He also urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands as that is pure criminality.

"Acts of criminality cannot be condoned and that the police will not hesitate to effectively deal with those who commit a crime, " he adds.

Meanwhile, premier, Job Mokgoro, condemned the torching and destruction of two police vehicles and a provincial ambulance in Lichtenburg.

Mokgoro has further made a plea to the police to arrest and charge all those that are responsible for the torching of two police vehicles and an ambulance.

He said the actions of these residents are an act of vandalism, lawlessness and cannot be tolerated.
