NW premier condemns violent action | News Article

The torching and destruction of two police vehicles and a provincial ambulance in Lichtenburg have been condemned by North West premier Job Mokgoro.

The angry residents in Boikhutsong torched and burned these vehicles following the deaths of two children who were hit by a private and police vehicle in separate incidents. Mokgoro has further made a plea to the police to arrest and charge all those responsible for the torching of the vehicles. He says the actions of these residents are an act of vandalism, lawlessness and cannot be tolerated. Mokgoro, however, says reports suggest that a police vehicle that was apparently chasing criminals allegedly struck and killed one child, while another was reportedly struck to death by a private vehicle in nearby Blydeville.

Mokgoro has further appealed to residents to remain in their homes and keep children away from the streets in line with the lockdown regulations pronounced by government.

He also called on residents to refrain from criminal acts.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena condemned in the strongest possible terms the actions of these residents. Kwena also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased children.

He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands as that is pure criminality.

"Acts of criminality cannot be condoned and that the police will not hesitate to effectively deal with those who commit a crime, " he adds.
