The planned mass screening and testing for COVID-19 scheduled for Blydeville in Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West, have been postponed due to incidents of violence in the area yesterday.

This as angry residents set alight two police vehicles and an ambulance after a child was killed by a police van.

OFM News recently reported police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says it is alleged that a K9 Unit vehicle hit a child who ran from a yard to cross Kudu Street in Boikhutsong yesterday afternoon. The child was later certified dead on the scene. He says this incident followed after a girl child was also hit by a bakkie in the Ottosdal-Lichtenburg road near Blydeville.

North West Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, was expected to join field healthcare workers during a COVID-19 mass testing and screening in the area.

Health department spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, said the programme has been postponed until further notice.

Municipal spokesperson, Puis Batsile, told OFM News that Mayor,  Daniel Buthelezi condemned the destruction of state vehicles and call for the community to desist from acts of violence.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the situation is calm and police are monitoring the situation.

Premier, Job Mokgoro, is expected to visit the bereaved families today.
