MEC takes #Covid19 programme to informal settlements─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 17:00 Thu, 23 Apr 2020
The Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) confirm it will continue to hand-out sanitisers to residents in the Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
MEC Makalo Mohale tells OFM News that the department has allocated 10 000 20 litre sanitiser buckets to residents within the municipal jurisdiction and will be expanding the programme to other parts of the province.
Following the handouts in Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu today, Mohale has vowed to focus more on drought-hit areas where residents have been struggling with water supply.
"Today we are rolling out this programme in Ward 43 in Thaba Nchu as well as Ward 35 and 37 in Botshabelo. This is important because we are mainly targeting informal settlements where there is water scarcity, with vulnerable people who can barely afford sanitisers and soap".
Mohale adds that they will also move to different informal settlements across the province teaching people about the importance of social distancing and hygiene.
His statement comes amidst growing concerns over the eviction of informal settlements dwellers in Gauteng, where the Red Ants have demolished several shacks.
