The couple will face charges of possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and bribery.

The provincial police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says they were arrested at their home in Welkom after an intelligence-led operation was conducted. He says when the police arrived at the suspects' residence, they found a shotgun, a 9mm pistol and ammunition. 

Makhele adds that as the search continued, six more live ammunition were found in the MMC's vehicle, which was parked outside a neighbour's house. 

He adds that the MMC approached two officers and tried to bribe them by offering an undisclosed amount of money in a plastic bag. He allegedly asked them to drop the case as he cannot afford to lose his post. 

The money and the vehicle were both confiscated. 

The provincial police commissioner, Baile Motswenyane applauded the police for their good work. She says the refusal of bribery by officials is an indication of loyalty and patriotism.
