The Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has praised the efforts of the men and women in blue who have so far apprehended over 6000 people for contravening the National Disaster Management Act since the lockdown.

Saul says these arrests by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which emanates from the non-compliance with regulations ranging from failure to confine to places of residence, operating businesses without a permit, to the selling of cigarettes, amongst others. He also applauded the members of the SANDF and traffic officers for their commitment to ensuring that there is compliance with the regulations.

Saul says the law enforcement and security agencies will continue to enforce regulations and undertake anti-crime operations. The provincial government has so far distributed food parcels to 25 555 households, reaching about 125 000 people during the national lockdown due to the coronavirus which has infected 17 people in the province.

The police are yet to comment.

"We applaud the SAPS for ensuring zero tolerance of all crimes during this time and commend them for the successful arrest of a suspect for the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman from Noupoort earlier this month. The suspect has already appeared in court," Saul adds.

"The Provincial Government on Monday night announced that it has delivered 668 and installed 379 [water] storage tanks. It says there is also a daily increase in the delivery numbers in terms of storage tanks, as well as hygiene products such as soap and sanitisers. The Provincial Department of Health in the province on Monday also announced that over 895 swab samples of suspected Coronavirus cases have been sent to the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) for testing.

The provincial department of Health, Lebohang Majaha, said as part of the national government's efforts to trace Covid-19 suspects, over 388 076 people have been screened so far.
