The Northern Cape MEC for Transport and Safety, Nontebeko Vilakazi, has expressed concern over the state of readiness Correctional Services in the province.

Vilakazi earlier today visited the Tswelopele Correctional Centre in Kimberley to facilitate the readiness of the centre for any eventualities.

Tswelopele is the designated centre to quarantine infected inmates in the province, should there be an outbreak in prisons. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize last night announced that the province has 17 Covid-19 positive cases and zero deaths. While the number of infections in the country has increased to 4793, the Northern Cape remains the province with the least infections. Vilakazi has meanwhile commended the management of the Tswelopele facility for preparations they have put in place and said they are ready for any eventualities. She urged all front-line employees within the correctional service department to take precautionary measures as the country continues to fight against the spread of the virus.

Whilst the Eastern Cape's Department of Correctional Services has the highest number of positive cases, there has been 11 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the total number of cases monitored by the department to 129 countrywide.

The new cases include 10 officials and one inmate at Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Tshwane.

Positive cases for officials in the Eastern Cape are now at 35. This is in addition to 56 inmates who tested positive.
