A 20-year-old man who recently escaped from detention in Delareyville near Lichtenburg in the North West has been re-arrested after a 12-day manhunt by police.

Police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, says the suspect was apprehended with the assistance of residents after acting on a tip-off in the area on Friday.

She says Kagiso Nakedi escaped from lawful custody in the early hours of 18 April, along with two other prisoners awaiting trial, who were both re-arrested.

She further adds that at the time of the escape, the suspect was in detention for two cases of residential burglary and theft.

Botma adds that Nakedi is expected to appear in the Delareyville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 4 May.

"It was discovered during a routine cell inspection at the station that the trio had forced open the burglar bars of one of the cells and escaped. The police were immediately mobilised and followed up information which led them to a house in Kopela village where Brian Moshe Mocks Chacha and Kuda Phiri were re-arrested later the same day," she adds.

Botma further adds that Chacha (24) and Success Phiri (27) appeared before the Delareyville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 April and were remanded in custody until Monday 25 May.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, applauded the residents for their cooperation which aided the police in the re-arrest of the escapees.
