The National Police Commissioner has expressed shock and outrage following the fatal accident involving two police officers in the Free State on Friday night.

The two officers were killed in Deneysville near Parys during a routine inspection of a driver thought to have been under the influence of alcohol.

Commissioner Kehla Sitole says it's alleged the driver of a light delivery vehicle collided into both policemen, despite them wearing reflector jackets.

He says the driver has since been arrested and is in police custody. He is set to face charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence, among others.

Sitole adds the driver will also face a charge of contravening the regulations of the Disaster Management Act, in terms of the national lockdown due to the Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, national police spokesperson, Vish Naidoo, says Sitole expressed outrage at the news of the members' passing and called for speedy justice to prevail in this matter.

Naidoo says Sitole expressed that the untimely passing of the two officers is a bitter pill to swallow, and he trusts that the suspect will be served with a fitting punishment if convicted.

The National Commissioner expressed his condolences to the families of both members and has also directed that support be provided to the bereaved family, Naidoo adds.
