Ward Councillor among those arrested for Lichtenburg violence | News Article

A ward councillor in Boikhutsong near Lichtenburg in the North West has been arrested alongside nine people following the torching and destruction of two police vehicles and one provincial ambulance on 21 April.

The suspects were arrested 6 days after the violence broke out following two fatal accidents that claimed the lives of an 8-year-old boy and 17-year-old teenage girl in separate incidents.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says nine of the suspects - aged between 18 and 23 - were arrested for crimes ranging from malicious damage to property, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of suspected stolen goods.

He says the councillor in question was also later arrested after his nine alleged accomplices, following his reported role in the said crime.

Mokgwabone says the suspects already appeared at the town's Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and Thursday, and were all remanded in custody until this Tuesday, May 5, for formal bail application.

This now brings the number of those arrested for the incident to twenty seven, after seventeen - including eleven men and six women - were arrested a few days ago.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, lauded the police for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the perpetrators are apprehended.

Mokgwabone says Kwena warned that the police will continue to work hard to ensure that those who undermine the authority of the state, including public office bearers, are dealt with harshly.
