#Coronavirus: NUM slams employer for planned retrenchment | News Article

The labour union NUM has slammed Village Main Reef (VMR), which owns the Tau Lekoa mine in Orkney outside Klerksdorp and Kopanong mine in the Free State, for the planned retrenchment of more than 6000 mineworkers.

The Matlosana regional secretary, Masibulele Naki, says the mining company aims to retrench 6,309 mineworkers from Tau Lekoa mine, Kopanang mine in Orkney near Klerksdorp and West Gold Plant.

The employer sent a notice of retrenchment on April 17, and in the letter, the company cited a substantial loss of income in millions of rands since the national lockdown due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Naki says its members will not give up their struggle for a dignified life against what he terms 'capitalist barbarism' happening at the company, and will continue to show their fighting spirit and tenacity against VMR.

Meanwhile, an employee at the mine, Lebohang Maputsoe, says they are also concerned about their salaries that have not been paid for the month of April with the notice of section 189(a) already on the cards.
