#Coronavirus: Freedom Square man the latest to die | News Article

The sixth person who passed away from the Coronavirus in the Free State has been identified as a 51-year-old man from Freedom Square Township in Bloemfontein.

122 people have been infected in the province thus far. The provincial Department of Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says the deceased presented underlying health conditions that are consistent with other Covid-19 deaths.

He says the man was treated and stabilised at Pelonomi Netcare Private Hospital on 30 April, but suddenly deteriorated and eventually passed on.

Mondli says the man was declared dead around 9 am and a swab for the virus that was sent for testing came back positive for Covid-19 on May Friday 1.

The number of people screened in the province is 773 854 – surpassing the 600 000 target that was set.

The number of people that have been tested amounts to 8253, he adds.

Mvambi further adds that screening and testing will be intensified to ensure that the department reaches all areas.

So far 96 patients in the Free State have recovered from Covid-19, which as of Sunday has infected a total number of 6336 people in South Africa, with 123 deaths and 2549 recoveries reported.
