ANC councillor out on bail after alleged statutory rape | News Article

An ANC ward councillor in Matlosana, which includes Klerksdorp in the North West, who has been accused of statutory rape, has been granted R2000 bail on Tuesday 5 May and is expected to re-appear in court on August 18, 2020.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says the 38-year-old allegedly had a romantic relationship with a 15-year-old teenage girl in Tigane near Hartbeesfontein from April to August 2019.

On Monday, he handed himself over to the police after the EFF in the region opened a case of statutory rape against him on Thursday 30 April. This came after personal Facebook chats between the two surfaced and exposed the councillor's alleged relationship with the teenager.

Mokgwabone says the investigation into the matter continues. The councillor handed himself over to the Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) on Monday. Furthermore, the ANC's Interim Provincial Committee(IPC) spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, on Monday night said the party will today publicly communicate its decisions on the matter that has the potential to bring the organisation into disrepute.

Morolong said "in accordance with the ANC Constitution, the party has taken decisions on this matter, given the grave nature of the allegations against our public representative and its potential to bring the organisation into disrepute."

The EFF member of the Provincial Secretary, Papiki Babuile, shared a post on his Facebook account and revealed that a case of statutory rape against the councillor had been opened. "In a Facebook conversation circulating on social media, the councillor is seen telling the minor not to tell her parents about the pregnancy as he will ensure that she terminates the pregnancy." He further told the minor that if people became aware that he is the father, he will lose his job and career. Babuile said according to South African laws a minor cannot consent to sexual intercourse with an adult.
