The disaster relief group's Hlengiwe Nkwanyana tells OFM News they will be handing out 1 000 food parcels to impoverished Kroonstad communities and are anticipating the programme will move to various parts of the country over the next three months.

She says they acknowledge that as the country continues to battle the spread of the Coronavirus, the pandemic has had a major economic effect on the poorest members of all societies. 

"The pandemic is affecting all South African societies, some have lost their jobs and others don't have food, we therefore saw the need to come and assist," said Nkwanyana.

OFM News last week reported on another handing over of food parcels and disinfection of farm houses in Kroonstad and Viljoenskroon by Mayor Lucky Phooko, together with Agriculture MEC William Bulwane. It was during this handing over where Bulwane vowed to ensure that some of the farm dwellers in these regions are relocated to more developed areas where they can have easier access to water and other municipal services. 

De Beers' Lebo Mphaka adds that they will continue working closely with the Gift of the Givers in the upcoming months to assist impoverished communities as the country tries to flatten the Covid-19 curve. 

She adds that communities in the Ngwathe Municipality in the Free State are amongst those that will soon also benefit from the programme.
