#SAlockdown: UFS medical student takes fun inside – VIDEOS | News Article

A national lockdown, a passion for sport, and challenging friends who say "you probably won't be able to do this".

That's what a medical student from the Free State would prescribe for someone who wants to sink a ball into unique, challenging holes with just one shot.

The 21-year-old Bertus Kleynhans from Bethlehem is a fourth-year medical student at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. Due to the pandemic, his studies will probably continue online from home for ten weeks.

“I was getting really bored and always thought I would be able to do these things - if only I had time. Then suddenly I had a lot. Friends sent me videos saying, ‘You probably won't be able to do that,’ and then I tried. "

Little do they know that this provincial tennis and cricketer's success may not be mere luck - at school his best cricket performance was five wickets for no runs in 2.4 overs. And then he has a great dose of enthusiasm and determination - while holidaymakers would for instance still be thinking about the morning’s first cup of coffee, he and his dad would already be returning from their first round of golf. Bertus still plays tennis and golf, but has moved away from team sports such as rugby and cricket.

Exactly how much time do you need to master these challenges, professors might wonder. "It takes me about 20 minutes for the easy ones and 40 minutes for the difficult ones, but then my friends will lift the bar."

The practical part of their medical studies will be completed once students are allowed back at university.

"Funny enough, for the first time ever, all I want to do is return to university and work. And then of course, there are my friends and the student life," he concludes.
