NW Health, Social Development's budgets to be prioritised─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:28 Thu, 07 May 2020
Two of the North West Departments which are at the forefront of the battle against the spread of the coronavirus and the effects of the national lockdown in terms of the National Disaster Management Act, will have their budgets prioritised.
The MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosho, on Thursday 7 May, during a media briefing in the capital of Mahikeng, said this is in line with the government's response or action against the virus. She says President Cyril Ramaphosa made a call for the government to contribute R130 billion of its equitable share towards the funding of Covid19.
The Department of Health has been leading the provincial Covid19 Command Council where mainly screening, testing, and contact tracing of suspected cases have been done through the department. Also, the department Social Development has been tasked to see to it that the most vulnerable groups of people in the province, including the poor, women and children, are taken care of during the lockdown.
So far the province has exactly 17 active cases after 20 people recovered from the virus, with no deaths reported. Meanwhile, during this briefing, the MEC of Social Development, Boitumelo Moiloa, said that the department will continue to provide food parcels to the needy and that a donation register has been developed to record information on all donors. Moiloa urged municipalities across the province to follow this process and not to receive nor distribute food parcels without the involvement of the department.
She previously refuted claims by the DA about an alleged food parcel scandal in the province. She said there is no truth in the allegations that food parcels have allegedly been locked in a storeroom in Matlosana, waiting for her to deliver in person for the purpose of media coverage. The DA's Gavin Watson said it is alleged that the distributors in Khuma near Klerksdorp helped themselves to some items from the packages before distributing the leftovers to the community.
